Cappadocia Hot Air Balloon Festival: Dates, Events & Visitor Guide
The Cappadocia Hot Air Balloon Festival is one of the most colorful times to visit Cappadocia, bringing special-shaped balloons and international pilots together above the region’s famous fairy chimneys and valleys.
But there are actually two major festivals travelers should know about: the Cappadocia Hot Air Balloon Festival, also known as BalonFest, and the wider Nevşehir Culture Road Festival. They are separate events, although their dates can overlap and both bring an extra festival atmosphere to Cappadocia.

What Is the Hot Air Balloon Festival in Turkey?
The Cappadocia Hot Air Balloon Festival, also known as BalonFest, is an international balloon event held in Cappadocia, Turkey. Unlike a normal morning in Cappadocia, the festival brings together unusual special-shaped balloons and pilots from different countries for several days of balloon-focused events.
In 2026, the seventh edition took place from July 30 to August 2 and featured 30 special-shaped balloons from 10 countries alongside Cappadocia’s regular commercial balloon fleet.
Expect to see balloons shaped like animals, hearts, characters, and other creative designs rising above Cappadocia’s volcanic landscape at sunrise. Evening balloon glow displays add another dimension to the festival, with balloons illuminated from the ground after dark.
When Is the Cappadocia Hot Air Balloon Festival?
The 2026 Cappadocia Hot Air Balloon Festival took place from July 30 to August 2, lasting four days.
Festival balloon activities begin very early because the main flights take place around sunrise, when weather conditions are typically most suitable for ballooning. In 2026, the official event listing gave a starting time of around 5:00 AM.
Evening events are also part of the experience. Balloon glow displays allow visitors to see special-shaped balloons illuminated while tethered to the ground rather than flying.
The exact program, locations, and timings can change from year to year, so check the current festival schedule before planning your visit.
Cappadocia Hot Air Balloon Festival Timings & Duration
The Cappadocia Hot Air Balloon Festival usually lasts several days, with balloon activity concentrated around sunrise and additional events taking place later in the day.
Early Morning: Balloon Flights
Arrive before sunrise to watch special-shaped festival balloons and Cappadocia’s regular commercial balloons fill the sky. Morning schedules depend heavily on weather and wind conditions, so flights are never guaranteed.
During the Day: Explore Cappadocia
Once the balloons have landed, use the rest of the day to explore Goreme, Love Valley, Red Valley, underground cities, open-air museums, and other Cappadocia attractions.
Evening: Balloon Glow
On selected evenings, special-shaped balloons remain tethered to the ground while their burners illuminate them from inside. These balloon glow displays create one of the festival’s most photogenic experiences after sunset.

Cappadocia Balloon Festival vs. Culture Road Festival
It is easy to confuse the two, but the Cappadocia Balloon Festival and the Nevşehir Culture Road Festival are not the same event.
Cappadocia Hot Air Balloon Festival – BalonFest
This is the event to prioritize if your main reason for visiting is hot air balloons. It focuses on special-shaped balloons, international participants, sunrise balloon displays, and evening balloon glow events.
The 2026 festival ran for four days from July 30 to August 2.
Nevşehir Culture Road Festival
The Nevşehir Culture Road Festival is a much broader cultural event organized as part of Turkey’s Culture Road Festival program. In 2026, it ran from August 1 to August 9.
Instead of focusing only on balloons, the nine-day program brought together concerts, exhibitions, workshops, talks, children’s activities, art, and gastronomy at venues across Nevşehir and Cappadocia.
If your trip overlaps both festivals, you can experience Cappadocia’s balloon spectacle in the morning and cultural events, exhibitions, or concerts later in the day.
Can You Ride a Hot Air Balloon During the Cappadocia Balloon Festival?
Yes, commercial hot air balloon flights can operate during the Cappadocia Hot Air Balloon Festival when weather conditions allow. However, attending the festival does not automatically include a balloon ride.
Festival display balloons and regular passenger flights should not be treated as the same thing. If you want to actually fly over Cappadocia, book a commercial Cappadocia hot air balloon ride separately.
Festival dates attract additional visitors, so booking your flight and accommodation well in advance is a good idea.
Things to Do at the Turkey Hot Air Balloon Festival
The festival is not only about watching balloons from one spot. Plan your day around the different experiences available across Cappadocia.
Best Places to Watch the Cappadocia Hot Air Balloon Festival
You do not necessarily need to be inside a balloon to enjoy the Cappadocia hot air balloon festival. Elevated viewpoints around Goreme and the surrounding valleys can provide spectacular views of balloons rising across the landscape.
Goreme is one of the most convenient bases because it places you close to several viewpoints and the region’s main balloon activity. Areas around Love Valley and Red Valley can also provide beautiful panoramic perspectives.
However, balloon launch locations and flight paths change according to wind conditions. There is no single viewpoint that can guarantee the same view every morning.
Is the Cappadocia Balloon Festival Free?
You can watch much of the Cappadocia Balloon Festival without booking a balloon ride. Public viewing of the balloon spectacle is separate from commercial passenger flights.
If you want to fly during the festival, you need to purchase a balloon ticket separately. Accommodation and balloon flights can also be in higher demand around festival dates, so plan ahead.
Is the Cappadocia Hot Air Balloon Festival Worth Visiting?
Yes, especially if seeing Cappadocia’s balloons is one of the main reasons for your trip. Cappadocia already has an extraordinary balloon scene on normal flying days, but the festival adds special-shaped balloons, international participants, and evening displays to the experience.
For photographers and balloon enthusiasts, it can be one of the most exciting times of the year to visit. Just remember that ballooning always depends on the weather. Festival dates do not guarantee that balloons will be able to fly every morning.
If taking a balloon ride is a priority, plan several nights in Cappadocia rather than arriving for only one morning. This gives you some flexibility if weather conditions cause cancellations.
