What Is Goreme Cappadocia?
Goreme is a small town in the Cappadocia region of central Turkey and one of the main tourism hubs for exploring the area. Surrounded by fairy chimneys, valleys, cave dwellings, and rock formations, it places visitors close to many of Cappadocia’s best-known attractions.
One of its most important landmarks is the Goreme Open-Air Museum, where centuries-old churches, chapels, and monastic spaces were carved directly into the rock. Goreme National Park and the Rock Sites of Cappadocia have been part of the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1985, recognized for both their extraordinary landscape and cultural heritage.
Goreme is also closely associated with Cappadocia’s famous hot air balloon flights. Weather permitting, balloons take to the skies around sunrise, offering aerial views across the valleys and distinctive rock formations.

A Brief History of Goreme
The story of Goreme Cappadocia is closely connected to its extraordinary landscape. Millions of years of volcanic activity and erosion shaped the soft rock into the valleys, cones, and fairy chimneys that surround Goreme today. Over time, people discovered that this rock could be carved relatively easily, allowing them to create homes, storage spaces, churches, and entire settlements within the landscape.
From Volcanic Landscape to Rock-Cut Settlements
Cappadocia has been home to many civilizations over thousands of years, including the Hittites, Persians, Romans, Byzantines, Seljuks, and Ottomans. Rather than simply building on the land, generations of inhabitants adapted to its unusual geology by carving spaces directly into the rock.
This relationship between people and the landscape is still one of the most distinctive features of Goreme. Cave rooms, rock-cut passages, churches, and other structures can be found throughout the town and surrounding valleys.
From Historic Settlement to UNESCO World Heritage Site
Goreme continued to evolve long after the Byzantine period, while cave dwellings and traditional stone buildings remained part of the local landscape. Agriculture, livestock farming, and carpet weaving were once important sources of income for the community before tourism became increasingly significant.
In 1985, Goreme National Park and the Rock Sites of Cappadocia were added to the UNESCO World Heritage List for their exceptional cultural and natural significance.
Today, Goreme brings these different layers of history together. Ancient cave churches stand near traditional homes and modern cave hotels, while the surrounding valleys continue to display the same dramatic formations that have shaped life here for centuries.
